Fire Smart Landscaping in Zone Zero

Main content start

Wildfire behavior research demonstrates strong evidence that embers can ignite fuels within the first 5 feet of a structure (Zone Zero), which may then ignite the home. "Fuels" here can mean vegetation, decks, wood piles, sheds, and other flammable items. People who live in high-fire-risk areas generally know that they need to keep their Zone Zero clear, but many are reluctant to change the aesthetic of their existing landscaping.

UC Master Gardeners and other community groups have created demonstration FireSmart landscaping that shows having a 5 foot hardscape around the home can also be beautiful. How can images of these homes be collected and analyzed so that a homeowner could search for similar house types, geographic areas, plant types, or other parameters and find ideas for their own FireSmart landscaping? Can these ideas be modeled onto their own property photos, in the way online stores feature "see it in your room" views of furniture? Can Google Earth photos be used or can you define the parameters needed to collect enough images for analysis from local groups?

This is both a potential image analysis project and a community engagement project. Working with community groups in forested and chaparral areas will allow them to encourage others to beautify their homes with FireSmart landscaping as well as to provide source images for analysis.
